30 Fish, 4 keepers
Greetings from BAYMEN Charters!
On board today, I had anglers Hunter Thayer and his Dad for light tackle striped bass.
At first light – Ghost town! The bottom of the tide and no fish in the bay. We did find one a fine 27″ incher to kick off the morning along a channel drop-off beside a flat. We ran to several spots trying to mark bait and bass for the first hour and there was nothing in the bay… UNTIL the tide turned!
An hour after the incoming we had a nice mix of fat sub-legal fish, some slot keepers, and some big fat fish with one that taped 37″ inches and 19 pounds, that hit a Baymen Jig. However the vast majority of our thirty bass were landed on rubber crank baits with the cast and count technique and a Baymen Bounce retrieve.
At one point, we looked up on Captain’s Flat and there were four deer standing there looking back at us. They watched us for a while and debated to swim the bay, but then retreated to the patches of woods and backyards of Standish Shore.
No signs of seals today and very, very little bait in the bay compared to yesterday. Also, a cold South wind seemed to cool the overall bite. I would have to say that compared to yesterday, there was about 80% fewer fish inside the bay. But you would never know it the way Hunter and his Dad fished and hooked up. They had multiple double hook-ups on LT as we fished 3 fow to 75 fow. We marked fish on the surface and half-way down to the bottom. This seemed to be where they were running and feeding the majority of the time today.
Some amazing marks on the sonar showed a couple of MASSIVE bass on the bottom. One fish in particular was absolutely gigantic and had to go at least 40 pounds! By far, one of the biggest fish I have ever seen on my electronics. And he was all by himself – a needle in a haystack in deep water.
Total catch and release today was a whopping 30 fish and four keepers – almost all of them landed in the second half of the trip. We did keep two slots for a Friday night fish fry at Hunter’s house and you are all invited! (jk).
I am off the bay for the weekend. Wishing everyone heading out safe and great fishing. Watch the NOAA marine forecast. Winds are suppose to kick up pretty good.
