22 Fish, 1 Keepah, blues in the mix
Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN!
On board today, regulars, Gary Condon and Greg Powers who have been fishing with me for years! A hot coffee and blueberry muffin was handed to the Captain and we were off to find the fish.
At first light, calm North wind, slight overcast, water 67 degrees. High tide dropping. Lots of 5″ baits around the docks.
We found fish right off this morning and got into topwater action with birds, bait and bass. The bait out in the bay is a 2″ silverside (see photo). This is the dominant bait at the moment. Peanut bunkers should be here soon… We hooked into some nice fish, but a little too crowded with other boats for my style so we moved on.
Next spot we found more birds, bait and bass but they were not holding and very skittish. We picked up a few fish and moved on again.
Third spot of the morning we found yet another school of bass with birds and bait in very shallow waters. Some cormorants also working the bait and bass. We got several drifts and several fish before heading across the bay to spot #4. That spot had tons of bait and birds but no fish.
We ran across the bay again and pulled into spot #5 of the morning. We picked up a nice fish in deeper waters (24 feet) and drifted again and for a few more fish on Baymen Jigs. These fish were hugging the bottom.
Onward to spot #6 and we were into fish right away, again on Baymen Jigs in deeper water. Fish were once again hugging bottom. We worked this large area for the rest of the morning. Gary hooked up on a nice keeper and we also got into some nice eating size blues. Then, as is Gary’s custom, we took a break for a wonderful brunch of subs, chips, spring water, and pastries from Montilios Bakery. What a feast!
Total catch and release today was 22 fish, mostly bass, with a few blues. We caught fish on Spooks, rubber crankbaits, Baymen Jigs, and poppers. The fish were finicky but we could get them to hit our tackle with work. A perfect fall-like morning, sunny, cool and lovely on the bay.
