25 Fish, 7 Keepers, GREAT WHITE SHARK
What a morning! Fish numbers have finally turned the corner and hopefully stay strong right through into the fall….
On board today, repeat client, Kevin Lee and his son, Leo (6) for light tackle striped bass. You may remember last year this father and son duo boated a whopping 24 fish! Well, today they surpassed that number with 25 fish caught and released – and 7 of them keepers!
At first light, a dropping tide and dead-calm bay like glass. Our first drift of the morning we had a few hits but no hook-ups. On a hunch, we ran to spot #2 of the morning and pulled into working fish, birds and bait on topwater and hugging the bottom. Wow…! So good to see this again as we have not had topwater action inside the bay since June!
For two solid hours we chased fish busting bait on top. There was a decent ball of bait and the bass pushed it all over the place in a half-mile square. We would shut down and catch on the bottom. Then the fish would all appear on top and we would catch fish on top. Then they would vanish only to appear 500 yards away or more. It was a lot of fun trying to keep up with these fish.
Next up, we met up with my friend, Spook, who tipped us off to some fish that were working on the bottom in a channel. We switched up to heavier tackle and dropped it down on their heads and hooked into a few more fish.
From there, we began to fish the little rips around the bay and they were nearly void of fish. So, we ran to a long cut that I like to fish and we got into some more fish, including more keepers!
A crazy highlight to the morning: In our last spot of the charter, a Great White leaped clear of the water in pursuit of what had to be striped bass! That is the second Great White Shark I am aware of this season INSIDE the bay. What a thrill!
Total catch and release today was a whopping 25 striped bass, 7 of them slot keepers 28″ – 31″ inches. All caught on light tackle in 5 feet to 25 feet of water. A great morning on the bay with two great anglers.
