A Sea Gull Story
A FELLOW BAYMEN told me a story about a gull he found in the bay, with a quahog firmly clammed around the gull’s bill. It was heavy enough to hold the gull’s head under water and the gull was going to drown. He grabbed the gull while on his lobster boat, pried the quahog off the gull’s bill, and set the gull on the deck. It finally took flight and flew across the bay. Well, you won’t believe it, but on yesterday’s charter the exact same thing happened to me! We rescued a drowning gull with quahog clamped onto the gull’s bill creating enough weight to hold the gull’s head under water. We brought the gull on board and cut the clam open and got the gull’s bill out. But this gull was in tough shape. It had obviously been trying to hold it’s head up for a long time and when we came by it could no longer do it, and was drowning. We kept it on board for an hour or so and it was conscious but did not move. Eventually, I beached the boat and carried it into the dunes and set into a protective area where it would be out of sight of predators and wished it well and hoped for the best. First time I have seen this in 31 years of guiding on the bay – Capt. Dave, baymenlife.com
