22 Fish, 4 Keepers To 16lbs on LT
Greetings from BAYMEN & Capt. Dave!
On board today, Jeff Nelson’s boys, Andy and Greg, for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, top of the tide and a chilly north breeze. The bay was calm. We ran to my first spot of the morning and found fish pretty quick holding on structure. Several drifts later, we had our first four fish of the morning landed and released.
Next up, we found a handful of topwater fish that were once again not holding but running and gunning the bay. No use chasing them, so we would set up drifts and wait for them to come past. When it was quiet, we would VERY SLOWLY motor to where we saw the last fish break. We did this for quite some time and started to rack up some numbers and keepers on light tackle topwater single inline hook poppers by INTENT TACKLE. I can not say enough good things about these hardbody lures and want to give a shout out to Dick Bowman for turning me on to them and giving me several of them as gifts. Thank you, Dick! You are the man!
Well, Andy, Greg, and I moved down bay and refished the structure where we got into striped bass at first light. We picked up a few more and then ran back up bay to look for more fish on the now half-tide dropping. We had a north wind and tide working together and could cover a lot of water fast with our drifts.
We were fishing in 4 fow as the tide was going out and landed four fine keepers. One of those fish was sixteen pounds on light tackle! What a blast…! As the morning brightened, many bass would smack our topwater poppers but not take them. They just played with them. The ticket seemed to be to pause when they hit and they would often come back around and crush it.
Total catch and release today was 22 striped bass, 4 keepers to 16 pounds – all on light tackle topwater poppers with single inline hooks, by INTENT TACKLE. A banner morning fishing the skinny water!
