45 Striped Bass!
Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN!
On board today, regulars Frank Harrington, his son’s Frank and Greg, and Greg’s son, Cameron, for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, two hours before high, dead-calm seas, and a smokey orange sunrise due in part to forest fires in Canada. Water temps 68 degrees at the dock. Winds near calm out of the north.
Once again today, we found fish right out of the gate and my charters began to hook-up almost immediately. The fish were a little spooky of the boat and engine noise, and also on a semi-selective feed. Bait ranged from 4″ ovals, to 1″, 2″, 3″ long and slender minnows. We tried poppers on top like the past few days, follows but no takers. So we switched up to all rubber crankbaits and it was game on all morning.
As with yesterday, we bounced around from school to school of topwater striped bass busting baits up on the flats. We varied our techniques to get the bass to take our tackle. Once we figured out a pattern, we had many double and triple hook-ups.
After working the spooky schools for some time, we ran to Plymouth waters and began to fish some structure. WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! Three slot keepers one right after another at the edge of a weed bed that sloped sharply down into a deep channel. Those fish were an answer to my prayers. Nothing marked on sonar but the bass were dumping off a flat and we were set up in the right place at the right time as they came through our drift.
We continued to work structure and investigate any bird action we saw around the three bays. Quite a few boats out for a Thursday! But nice to see people are able to work and still get some time on the water – one of the big perks of living by the bay and a huge draw to this town.
Great clients and friends today. The “A” Team have been fishing with me for many years and it was great to have one of the grandsons, Cameron, on board today. He is 13 and he absolutely crushed it! He can really fish.
Total catch and relase was a whopping 45 striped bass with 3 slot keepers that went home with the clients. They also land and released a sea bass – that was a surprise. Another awesome morning on flat-calm seas and a bay full of fish. We are ten days out from the start of the fall run!
Back at it. STAY POSTED:
