36 Fish, 9 Keepers
Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN!
On board today, regulars Gary Condon and Greg Powers for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, a dropping tide, heavy overcast, light north wind. Bay near calm with just a little chop. Water temps 62 degrees.
We left the harbor at first light, coffee and muffin in hand (thanks Gary!) and headed for our first stop of the morning. Much to our delight we found fish right away and landed a pair of very fine light tackle bass on topwater poppers and spooks.
Second spot of the morning we decided to give my Baymen Jigs a try and dropped them down to the bottom…WHAM! Fish on! Right where they were supposed to be! The morning was shaping up well.
Third spot of the morning was void of fish as the tide was near dead low. We made a short run to our fourth spot of the morning and landed two more fish. We worked the area hard without another hit. The light north wind turned light east… Then light south… Then light East again! No rain at all but heavy cloud cover all morning and the air and water temps were cold on the incoming tide. We all wore jackets.
Fifth spot of the morning on the incoming was lit up! We dropped down Baymen Jigs and it was one hook-up after another. I marked two absolute MONSTER bass hugging the bottom but they would not touch our gear! Simrad said they were very, very big fish…
Sixth spot of the morning – Game on! Fresh fish in several schools came into the bay. At one point I counted 150 striped bass on the sonar all at once! A nice mix of slot keepers and over slot fish chasing bait into the bay. Once again, we dropped Baymen Jigs on them and landed a bunch. Crazy fights and some great runs on the light tackle in deep waters. These fresh fish fought incredibly hard.
We broke for an early “brunch” and just drifted along while enjoying subs, chips, drinks, and pastries from Montillio’s Bakery. Gary never fails to bring a big cooler full of great food for the Captain and his crew. We stuffed ourselves and fished one last spot on the bay and called it a really great, fun morning with lots of fish. Total catch and release today was 36 striped bass, 9 keepers, to 18 pounds that nudged 39 inches. Wow..!
Back at it. STAY POSTED.
