5 Fine Fish On LT
Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN!
On board today, long-time client, Rolando Jeter for light tackle striped bass fishing. Rolando has been with me for about twenty seasons. At first light, a very light west wind, near top of the tide. Water temps 57 degrees, air temps 52 and warming to low 70’s.
We found high flyers again today and Rolando got his first fish on his first cast of the morning! A very fine striped bass that hit a topwater popper. We had many follows by fish asking “the question” and got some hits and spits and tail swipes before landing our second fish of the morning some time later.
Today’s fish were just like yesterday’s fish. VERY few fish, chasing VERY few baits (appear to be adult herring) and running and zipping around the flats, not holding and not schooling. Lone wolf fish only making fishing a real challenge for us. The fishing is more like fishing for Albies, but again, very few fish in the bay anywhere compared to past seasons this time of year.
AT one point, we took a break and ran far across the bay in search of other fish. We found none. We worked some cuts and banks and flats and some rocks, all to no avail.
WHERE ARE THE ACRES OF MIGRATING SPRING STRIPED BASS WE ARE SO USED TO SEEING THE PAST 32 SEASONS I HAVE BEEN GUIDING..? Not in our bay, that is for sure…
Well, the weather was delightful, and seas were calm and we ran back to where we started. I offered up a prayer for some more big fish and found some! We pulled right into a small school of striped bass in the 15-18lb pound range and Rolando landed a few more very fine fish on LT.
Total catch and release today was 5 fish, all keepers, all over slots. A lovely June day.
