Greetings from BAYMEN & Capt. Dave!

On board today, repeat clients Spencer Mott & his crew for light tackle striped bass. At first light, dead-calm seas, rising tide, overcast skies and a wisp of West wind. Water temps 61 degrees. Perfect conditions for the Spring Blitz.

The bay was very quiet as we headed out. We stopped at the first rip of the morning and not a bump. I picked up the glasses and started to scan the bay. FISH on the horizon! We set off in their direction and a short time later we pulled into a large school of striped bass working a bait ball on the surface. It was a classic Spring Blitz and awesome to see. We pulled right into it.

The bass were feeding on micro-sized thin, white/silver minnows and were feeding VERY selective. It took a lot of patience and persistence to get them to hit our light tackle. But the Mott crew kept at it and we began hook into some great fish up to 14lbs. In a blitz like this, you would think and wish it would be a fish on every cast. But when they “imprint” on tiny micro baits, they don’t come easy. We had to mix up the techniques with hardbody topwater poppers, swimmers, rubber crank baits, rubber glide baits, and even a Baymen Jig! But we got our fish.

After working this school of bass for several hours (!) we moved on in search of more fish. The winds began to shift from light West to North and then flirting with NE/E. We found several solo fish on structure but they only played with our tackle and didn’t want to eat – typical sometimes when the winds turn East.

We saw seals, osprey, and. enjoyed great conversation and fishing. The morning just flew by. Total catch and release today was sixteen earned striped bass, four of them over slot. Our best bass weighed 12lbs and 14lbs on the Boga Grip. A perfect spring morning of fishing on the bay.
