Scouting Trip
Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN!
Ran the bay at first light for a quick scouting trip. Found some topwater fish right off but they did not hold and were very spooky of the boat. Picked up two fish before they vanished.
Marked some fish in deeper waters with lockjaw. They would not touch my fly pattern. Then found another ball of fish with some slots mixed in. They were all hugging bottom. I also ran to several more spots that had no fish in them at all… Confirmed reports of some medium size blues in the bay so keep some wire handy. I saw none today.
Water temps finally dropping. Bay was 63 degrees overall and harbor was about 65. Also the harbor docks were stacked at first light with small minnows. No bass on them.
We are on track for the Fall Run to begin on or about August 25th, as is typical most years. We should see more and more topwater action begin to pick up and of course the peanut bunker should start to appear the end of the month.
TODAY’S SET-UP: Thomas & Thomas 9 wt Exocett with Orvis 300 grain sinking line, 20lb leader and a Muddog Saltwater Baitfish pattern tied large and heavily dressed. ORVIS Mirage reel.
