18 Fish, 2 hours, All on Fly
Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN Charters!
RECON TRIP – Fish were stacked this morning in many of my spots around the bay! Lots of topwater action in 6 fow or less. An absolute blast on the fly rod, a floating line, and a topwater popper. The takes were insane… It took a little work to get the boat into a “Perfect Drift” without spooking the fish, and once there, you MUST put the fly right ahead of the fish, in front of their noses. There were a few chase downs, but again, fly presentation was critical this morning, due to the flat dead-calm conditions.
In addition to finding fish over the skinny water flats on the dropping, there were also fish hanging on the channel edge drop-offs and in the mini rips. On my way back in I came across a school of fish in 26 fow and had to stop and throw a sinking line on my 9 wt fly rod. WHAM! Picked up a nice fish on my first cast and several others after resetting the drift.
Total catch and release today was 18 fish in just two hours. All on the 9 wt fly rods, 20lb leaders. Top two flies today? Baymen Universal on the 300 grain sinking line, and a white/red topwater popper on the floating line. 15 of my fish were on the topwater popper in skinny waters. All flies had crimped barbs. I really put pressure on the fish today with the 9wt TFO Axion II X. That rod was doubled over all morning and worked flawlessly.
Came in a 32 knots on a glassy bay. The boat ran absolutely perfect. Loving the new Merc four stroke!
One more RECON trip coming up and then things will bust wide-open as my regular season begins. Charters are stacked up.
