9 Fish
On board today, I had new client, Frank Hannon and his three boys for light tackle striped bass.
Conditions looked perfect at first light: gentle south wind, high tide dropping, and seas near calm. But there was no bait in the bay and there were almost no fish!
My crew and I covered most of the bay inside (except Plymouth) and were able to pick up solitary fish here and there. We marked only a couple of fish all morning. Macks continue to be thick out front and a few boats ran out for them. Glen Soule is the only boat that I know of to land a keeper bass today.
We ended the morning with 9 fish total from micros up to 27″ inches. Most were in the mid-twenty range and very healthy.
May overall has been one of the slowest springs on record for keeper bass in our bay. It has also been the slowest spring for topwater action and the slowest for bait inside the bay. We know there are fish south of us in great numbers like we normally experience here in our bay. You have got to wonder if it is the hundreds of thousands of seals off Monomoy or if it is just a fluke (no pun intended). NJ, RI report amazing fishing, and a few friends of mine that fish in the inside and outside Cape Cod waters report excellent fishing with big fish.
So, we continue to wait on big fish and massive numbers of fish to arrive inside our bay as they always have, since I started guiding 23 years ago.
Stay posted, stay hopeful, and don’t worry: the fish will arrive.
