50 Fish
We turned the bay upside down today and boated 50 fish, all shorts, to 27.5″ inches. On board I had repeat clients, Frank Harrington, Frank Jr., Ken Hartshorne and Brian, for light tackle striped bass.
The crew worked hard non-stop all morning in search of fish. We found singles scattered around the bay and a couple of big schools on the dropping tide hugging bottom.
Almost every fish was on the bottom today in 7-25 FOW. There were a couple of quick topwater fish but nothing we could set a drift on and get into. Everything came from down below.
Top tackle continues to be rubber crank baits and Capt. Dave’s Baymen Jig (available at MGC Bait & Tackle, Rte 53, Hanover). We even had two sea robins and a sea bass hit our tackle today with the warming waters in the 60’s. But we are still watching for the big fish to arrive. Macks continue to be thick out front as they always are this time of year, peaking around Memorial Day. But the big fish have not arrived to slam them yet…
Wicked hot on the bay yesterday and today and beautiful weather with calm seas. Let’s hope the summer-like weather continues and let’s hope some big fish start to come into the bay. As we have been seeing all May, there is very little bait inside.
We ended today’s trip with 50 fish boated and released. They did not come easy we kept at it and had a lot of fun with a great crew.
