81…77… 66… FISH!
Playing catch up – I have been crazy busy with charters this spring! Thank you so much to all of my great customers and friends that have booked with me again this season and for 2019 & 2020. Here are three of my latest reports:
JUNE 13, 2018 – On board today with repeat clients Frank Harrington, Ken Hartshorn, and Frank’s sons Brian and Frank, Jr. NOAA was on the fence and we went back and forth if we should roll or reschedule. We decided there were no safety concerns so we went for it. At first light, West winds and some chop. And lots and lots of top-water fish on the incoming! Just a ton of fish, birds and bait. They hit our light tackle with gusto giving some great fights on LT. As the tide began to rise, winds turned SW and began to pick up. The bay was white-capped but we kept right on fishing. Top-water finally shut off and thousands of fish left the bay continuing north of the spring migration. But boy was it great fun while they were in the bay! Total catch and release today was a whopping 81 fish for four rods. Another great day with a great crew of my regulars.
JUNE 12, 2018 – On board today, I had repeat anglers Molly DeVillers and her god children, Emily and Matt for striped bass. Molly and her husband, Chris have been fishing with me for many seasons now. Emily fished her first trip with me a few weeks ago and this was Matt’s first time on board. These three anglers fished like pros and we were into striped bass right from the start. A fellow angler flew by me and gave me the word on where the fish were thick. We went there and they were indeed stacked up in some big schools under birds! The bass slammed our rubber rank baits. They were a little finicky at times, but for the most part they hit what we threw at them. At one point, we decided to leave the schools and go fish some structure in skinny water – KEEPAH for Emily! She hooked into and landed a nice dinner fish that went home with her in the cooler. Total catch and release today was 77 fish! A great morning on the bay with some great anglers.
JUNE 7, 2018 – One nice thing about having a great customers is they have great friends! Chris & Molly DeVillers booked a few trips for their friends John and Dwight to fish with me and they were great people just like Molly & Chris. And they were also great anglers just like Molly & Chris! So, to say the least, we really had a fun trip on near flat seas. Lots of fish were active on top and also holding on structure. The fish were finicky, but we kept at it and they took our LT baits consistently. The secret to fishing rubber crank baits is the “Baymen Bounce.” A contstant, steady retrieve while popping the tip of the rod every second, keeping time like the second hand on a clock. Try it and see if your hook-up rates don’t increase by 33% or more! Total catch and release today was 66 fish for two rods! It was a busy morning with two new great anglers.
That brings us up to date. A few other notes: We have seen seven deer on the flats so far his spring, including a lovely doe today. She was way out on the minus tide but we never saw her swimming the bay. Also, very few seals around at the moment and no great whites reported locally – yet! Lastly, no pogies inside but macks continue to be outside from 40-70 feet.
