70 Fish
Thursday, May 31, 2018
On board today, I repeat client Gary Condon with nephew Matt Daily, and friend Greg Powers, for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, there was a light SE wind that stayed pretty flat all morning. The East wind kept trying to set up but it still stayed light and was not an issue. We found almost all our fish today on structure, with very little bird activity. It was an amazing morning with 70 fish, but my crew had to work for them. At one point, we found a huge pod of fish down deep, in the Easterly breeze. It was just enough to cause these fish to shut down the bite. We kept on them and coaxed several to take our light tackle.
We moved around a lot today, from spot to spot looking for some big fish. But most of the fish inside the bay continue to be healthy schoolies. However, Matthew hooked into a nice fish in skinny water that looked to be at least 34″. That fish crashed the surface hard and threw Matts topwater lure far from the boat. Heart-breaker, but that comes with the game.
On our way in, we found a decent school of bass at Two Rock and hooked into a bunch, bringing our total catch and release today to 70 fish! Not bad, considering our daily average is 15 fish.
As always, Gary & Co. had a cooler packed with food. He handed me a large coffee at the dock and on the way out, a giant chocolate eclair. He was worried that the Captain was looking a little thin and took it upon himself to correct the problem! After lots of fishing, we took a break and had giant subs with all the fixings and a large choice of iced beverages (non-alcolholic for those wondering). At the end of the trip, Gary sent home a sub for my son to make sure he was also well fed.
A great day on the bay with one of my favorite crews!
