8 Stripers
On board today, I had repeat client and good friend, Col. Richard Comstock, for fly rod striped bass fishing.
A Dead-calm morning on the bay with a light south wind that turned light east late morning.
A handful of birds were working bait on topwater. A few bass were breaking water, but most were down deep. At one point we marked a MASSIVE school of bass that gave us action for a few drifts and vanished. How do that many fish do that?
Bait was very tiny one inch or slightly smaller olive minnows, and tightly balled. Much of the bait balls did not have fish on them. So, that tells you the numbers of fish in the bay at the moment are still very limited. But that will change soon!
Two small schools of fish were working in the bay, off and on, for most of the morning until the winds turned east. After that, it was quiet.
Richard is a “fly or die” angler and has been fishing with me for years. He is a superb caster and has fished throughout the US and other parts of the world. The man is a fly fishing machine and a joy to guide!
We ended the morning with 8 fish boated to 25″ inches. A great start to the season.
Tight lines & stay posted:
