70 Fish, 3 Keepers
On board today, I had Col. Richard Comstock for our fourth trip out this season. And today, everything was lined up perfect: South winds 5 knots, rising tide, overcast, rain and TONS of bait and fish!
Right from the start, we were into schools of striped bass. They were small fish, lots and lots of micros of 14″ inches and up, with a few big fish feeding right along with them. Richard is an all fly or die angler, and we fished topwater poppers, Baymen Universals, olive/white clouser, a streamer, and perhaps our best fly pattern of the day: “the ugly fly” which really wasn’t that ugly. It was a pattern that Richard tied when he first got into tying, but he never fished it. “Too ugly.” Well, today it was our top producer and landed most of our fish (see photo).
The best bass of the morning was a fourteen-pound striper that taped out at 34 inches. Our second best fish was a nine pounder that taped out at 29 inches. The third best fish of the morning popped the hook at the boat while yours truly was trying to Boga-Grip it. That fish was about 30 inches and around twelve pounds.
Most of todays fish were small, healthy, and not boat shy at all. However, the last school of the morning was indeed boat shy and more finicky that all the other fish. One interesting note: A huge ball of fish had little interest in our topwater popper. So we ran three miles away to another pod of fish and they slammed the popper.
Total catch and release today was seventy (70) fish with three keepers, all taken by Richard on the fly rod. An amazing morning we won’t soon forget.
Back at it. Stay Posted: We are just getting going.
