7 Fish, Keepah On The Fly
Today, the bay started to turn around and a handful of fresh fish came in. My client and good friend, Richard Comstock on board for Day 2 fly rodding for striped bass.
No birds, no bait, no fish on topwater at first light. It was dead-low tide so we hit the little guzzles with a floating line and topwater popper. Bingo! We found a bunch of fish in the back of a guzzle in very shallow water. If you fish with poppers, you know the thrill of the strike! We picked up several decent fish, all fat, healthy schoolies.
Next up, we found topwater action as a couple of small pods of fish came into the bay on the rising tide. They only stayed up for thirty seconds. But we marked them in 30-40 FOW before they vanished. We picked up another nice fish, this time on a fast sink line and my Baymen Universal Fly Pattern with a weighted head.
From there, we found another small pod of fish up on the flats. They were there for only a minute and then gone. We had a couple of good follows and swipes and misses.
Next, we visited a tiny cut that gave up a few fish yesterday. Today, it was void of fish.
One our last spot of the morning, I set a drift over some rocky structure thinking there HAD to be a fish there. Nothing. Then I spotted maybe a dozen fish on topwater about fifty yards off the rock. KEEPAH! Richard threw the popper on the floating line in 4-5 FOW and a fat keeper slammed it. What a rush to get a nice fish on a topwater popper!
We ended the morning with seven fish total. We saw a lot more fish today than yesterday, but still waiting for the massive schools of bass and bait just south of us. Stay Posted:
