4 Fish
It’s been a downward slope for many days now. No bait inside the bay to speak of, to bring in and hold some fish.
On board today, client and good friend, Richard “The Machine” Comstock for fly fishing striped bass.
At first light, two fish boiled right in the harbor. Further out, a pod of fish was ripping up the water. Only problem was, they were in 6″ inches of water in the middle of the bay up on the flats. No problem. I’ll just run down bay 1.5 miles, cut over, and run back up bay 1.5 miles and catch them when they come off the flat. When we got there, it was over and the fish were gone. The channels are not marked and I run us right up onto a massive flat. No problem. I’ll just take off my shoes, tie on dock line and hope over the side and walk the boat and client to the channel. Done and off to look for fish down bay.
There was no a bird on the bay, no bait, and no fish. Sight fishing and topwater was out. So we did the next best thing: structure fished. The waters were crystal clear everywhere. We must of hit a dozen or more micro structures all over the bay.
Then, to our delight, a pod of six fish or so drove some tiny baits to the surface in a very narrow guzzle. Richard worked the Baymen Universal Fly Pattern on a sinking line and landed four fish. Then it went quiet and the fish were gone.
We covered more of the bay and even backtracked as the flats got flooded but there was just no fish inside today. I kid Richard and call him “The Machine” because he just goes non-stop fly casting. He caught what was inside the bay today and we did not leave many stones unturned.
Stay posted: Tons of fish south of us and coming our way…
