7 fish
On board today with client and good friend, Richard Comstock, for Day 3 of striped bass fly fishing.
The winds stayed low all morning and were W at first light, then turning NNE around 9:30. The bay was once again very, very quiet compared to this time of year over the last 23 years I have been guiding. Still no fish to speak of inside the bay and bait is almost non-existent. Typically during the spring blitz of past years, we could land 15-20 a morning. Some mornings the bay would be an insanity blitz and 50, 75, or even 100 fish mornings were not uncommon. So far this spring 2016, we have only had one day where the fishing was excellent. The rest of the days in May have been bump and grind (so far!).
We fished a total of a dozen spots today in Duxbury, Plymouth, and Kingston to land 7 fish. We dropped a couple more, including what we were sure was a keeper that threw the hook after a several minute fight, taking drag.
Richard is a machine and he kept at it non-stop all morning and we made the best of the slow fishing and had a lot of fun!
Rumors flying around of a forty-inch fish landed in the bay and several fish in the mid-thirty inches, but I have yet to speak to anyone first hand. Macks continue to be thick out front, and rumors of pogies and herring around the bay, but I have not seen them.
Watching the weather and getting reports of anglers still slamming the bass south of us. We need bait inside in massive quantity and the bass will follow.
