31 Fish
On board today I had repeat client, Dick Bowman for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, it was blowing and raining NNE and it never let up all morning. But there was a small quantity of bass in the bay and with a lot of work, we landed quite a few.
As has been the case all month, no bait and no birds to speak off. But enough today to keep some bass inside and keep us busy with a few breaks in between. Heading out, we found a couple birds working and we landed a couple fish under them. Then we ran to the rip and found a few more birds and marked a school of fish and got many drifts before they dissapeared.
At slack tide, we moved into shallow guzzles witrh poppers. Several east-winders would follow and swipe but not take. We landed a few micros on the poppers. The tides are turning around very quickly and we ran back out into the bay for the incoming tide. We fished structure from Duxbury to Kingston and landed a few more bass.
Back at Bug Light, a few birds were working and we marked a school of fish under them. We made a half-dozen drifts and picked up some more fish before that school vanished. From there, we hit two more structure spots and Dick picked up a nice schoolie just short of legal in very skinny water that had me on lookout for rocks in the NNE winds of 15 – 20.
We ended the rmorning with 31 striped bass, from micros of about 12″ inches, to big schoolies to 27″ inches. The fish fought hard and a couple fooled us into thinking they were bigger fish when they hit. The winds never let up today and we got knocked around good. Tonight my body is feeling it! But a great morning of LT fishing. Top tackle today: my Baymen Jig, and small rubber crankbaits.
