65 Fish, 4 Keepers
On board today, I had repeat client, Stephen Cannavo and his son, Stephen, Jr. for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, we found a pod of fish and it was game on! The bass hammered our Spooks in the shallows along the flats on the new moon low tide and the incoming. A good mix of fish, schoolies, small keepers and a few cows. Birds were working some of our spots and the bass were rolling on top. In other spots, we fished a Baymen Jig and picked up a keeper off the bottom in 30+ feet of water.
At one point, in the thick of a feeding frenzy, a gull swooped down and grabbed Stephen Jr.’s lure and flew off with it. Stephen had quite the fight on his hands bringing in the gull. But it was barely hooked and we set it free and it flew off back into the feeding frenzy of gulls, birds and bass.
One of my spots that has been on fire the past week, was very quiet this morning. Peanut bunker by the tons had packed the area all week, but today it was void of bait with only a few bass hanging around. So, we ran to one of my other top spots and it was lit up! Lots of bait, birds and bass in the mix and we got into them thick. We also landed a huge shad – a sure sign the fall run is underway. These are migrating fish and the run has started about a week or ten days early. One spot we fished had water temps at 59 degrees!
Total catch and release this morning was 65 bass and 4 keepers. When we left to head for home, bass were still breaking. A good sign.
Stay posted: Back at it and looking into the face of September. It could be a doozy…
