73 Fish, 1 Keeper…
On board today, first-time clients Rob Ali, his daughter, Grace, and Nephews Jack and Thomas, for light tackle striped bass.
It was flat calm at first light with a lovely sunrise and a dropping tide. We fished the dropping tide and boated a bunch of fish. We saw Spook working the bay in his racing shell and he had a nice keeper on board! We fished near him for a short time but did not want to crowd him so we moved to my next spot. We picked up several more fish at the channel edge drop-offs and fished it until slack. The bite stopped and we moved on.
Next stop of the morning was T-Time, a nickname for one of my favorite spots. Keeper On! We hooked into a decent fish on a topwater Chug Bug in very skinny water. That fish threw the hook right at the boat just as I was about to Boga-Grip it. Heartbreaker!
Next spot we found a few fish but it was slower fishing. We left there and started working the incoming tide in plymouth waters and got into a massive school of stripers. We started to rack up numbers of fish for four rods until everyone got tired out!
Off to our next spot, we found fish along Clark’s island in very shallow water. These fish were smart and would follow but rarely take our tackle. Too sunny, too clear of water. Lot of fish could be seen swimming over the bottom and above the weed beds.
Last spot of the morning and the fish were hitting our tackle again. Topwater or sub-surface, it didn’t matter. Some of the topwater hits were very exciting and explosive! Everyone landed fish and we finally called it a great morning after boating and releasing our 73rd striped bass!
We had a “first” today that was pretty cool to see. Grace was hooked up on a nice bass and working it to the boat when a seal popped up, chased it down, grabbed it in it’s mouth and pulled it off the rubber crank bait! Then, it just looked at us with the striped bass sideways in it’s mouth like a big dog with a big bone! In twenty-four years of guiding, I have never had a seal steal a striper from a client! Today was a first!
So great to see the migration underway and lots of fish moving in and out of the bay. Macks continue to be thick our front and blues continue to be almost non-existent inside the bay. But the stripers are here in decent numbers at the moment.
Stay Posted: World-class fishing continues in the fall run.
