76 Fish, 8 Keepers
On board today, I had regular, Dick Bowman, who has been fishing with me for seven years. Today, we targeted striped bass in the shallow waters at dead-low tide incoming.
At first light, we found topwater fish busting pods of peanut bunker. We also found silver sides (first this season) and bass. A few birds, but most fish were not under birds.
Dick pounded the bay with light tackle poppers. The top producers were once again Gagg’s Grabbers and a wooden lure I think is called Office Donkey lol… It resembles the colors of a large pogy on the surface and our biggest fish today slammed it. But you had to land your lure on the fish or they would not chase it down. Too much bait in the water.
We also did well with pearl/white rubber crank baits. Another good lure today was a small, white Sebile topwater darter. Super spooks and Chug Bugs would of also worked well today in the skinny waters. We were often bumping ground just to give you an idea of how shallow we were fishing today!
Total catch and release today was a whopping 76 fish, and 8 keepers to 37″ inches and 18 pounds! An absolute blast on topwater light tackle in shallow waters.
Hard to believe August is near the end. September should produce some excellent fishing as long as the bait stays around. I have not seen a blue in side the bay this season, but another angler who fishes the bay hard got into them over the weekend for a tide or two.
