55 Fish, 1 keeper
On board today, I had new client, Dick Cullen and his son, Matt, for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, the bay was near calm and a high tide dropping. Almost no birds working… I thought this was strange and we started to work around the bay hoping we could sight fish before changing things up and going to structure. To our delight, fish started rolling all over the bay. No busting under birds, but quietly slurping and swirling. Watching the sonar, we were able to pick out pods on the bottom and watch for them to come to the surface feeding on schools of tiny one inch minnows. Gobs of tiny minnows in mutliple schools.
Today we fished three main lures: rubber crank baits for sub-surface, poppers for topwater, and Baymen Jigs for bottom fishing. We caught fish on all the tackle with the rubber cranks getting the nod most of the time.
Total catch and release today was a whopping 55 striped bass with one small keeper. Not a bad morning of spring blitz fishing in perfect summer-like conditions!
