12 Fish On Fly
On board today, client and good friend, Richard Comstock of NYC, for fly fishing striped bass. At first light, raw, choppy and rain on and off. We picked our way out to where we found fish Wednesday, and they were there. No as many as Wednesday morning and not as many as Thursday afternoon, but plenty to keep us busy!
Richard fished a variety of fly patterns. The fish were very finicky, feeding on a bait we never saw. Micro-sized and clear was our guess and lots of it. The fish were almost all on topwater but still we could not see the bait. Top flies were red/white poppers with marabou tails, and the old stand-by Chartreuse clousers.
No other boats on the bay first half of the morning in the windy NE, and then two boats came out for a while and then were gone.
Total catch and release today: 12 striped bass all on the fly. Small and medium fish, short of keepers but strong on the fight! It was a great morning on the bay and great to be fishing again with Richard “the machine” Comstock.
Back at it after this storm runs its course. Stay posted.
