53 Fish
On board today, I had repeat clients Jim Crosta, Howard Soep, and their grandsons Al & Nathan for light tackle striped bass. This group has been fishing with me for many seasons and have had some amazing days on the bay.
Today, at first light, it was dead-calm on the rising tide. We found a few fish breaking water but most fish were down deep, as has been the norm this entire spring with few exceptions. But the breaking fish told us where the schooled fish and baits were today.
We fished my Baymen Jigs, rubber cranks, Chug-Bug poppers. Jim also fished a custom pencil popper in olive/white and Al Gagg’s minnows. We caught fish on all of the tackle in just about every spot we visited.
The fish were not thick by any means other than when we found them on bait balls. Those fish were tightly schooled on bait down deep. Find the bait, find the fish and that was our technique.
My crew fished hard non-stop and boated a total of 53 striped bass to 27 3/4 inches. No keepers but the action was steady and the bay remained flat-calm all morning. All a joy to fish these condtions with a great crew.
