33 Fish, 2 Keepers
On board today I had repeat clients Scott Kehoe, Stephan Murphy, Craig Cote, and Ed Foley for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, we found a handful of bass on a flat and the edge of a drop-off. Some bass would chase bait over the flat and gave us some good top-water action on poppers. Other bass held down deep in 18-24 fow and we jigged for them with Baymen Jigs (.50). We fished this spot for a good hour or more and did very well, considering there was a light ENE wind.
Next, we hit the deep waters of 40-50+ fow and marked schools of bait and bass on the bottom. A couple times bass would push bait to topwater but only for five seconds or so. Then it was back down to the bottom. We were able to set many drifts over the deep-water stripers and did well with Baymen Jigs (.50).
A few hours later, we moved deeper into the bay and fished shallow water structure with poppers. The winds were still ENE and we had some “east-winders” chase and swipe but not take. But we were able to coax a few fish to commit and slam the poppers.
Late morning, we fished all round Clark’s Island to more “east-winders” and landed a few small fish.
We ended our morning with a Daily-Double, landing 33 bass total, including two small keepers, all in a light ENE that kept it very enjoyable. Very little chop and at times calm seas. All of today’s bass were wide and fat fish, all very healthy looking. These big schoolies fought wicked hard all the way to the boat. I am predicting that in two more seasons, 2018, we could be looking at a banner year for big bass inside our bay!
A great morning with a great crew of anglers that have been fishing with me for six seasons. Back at it. Stay Posted:
