47 Fish on LT & Fly
Mr. Dick Bowman, USMC, on board today for light tackle and fly fishing striped bass.
At first light, calm conditions, light SW/W and dropping tide – and lots of fish. Water temps in the harbor 70 degrees. Out in the bay some spots dipped to 54 degrees.
We found fish in every spot we went to today and some spots were stacked up with fish. Hook-ups on every single drift. Some bigger fish finally moving in and mixing in with the smaller fish. We got into a ton of bass 24-27 inches today. What an absolute blast!
We worked the outgoing tide all morning and found a mix of topwater and bottom feeding fish. Almost no birds in the bay as has been the case most of this season. The primary bait today was squid, pogy, and fingerling herring dropping out of the rivers.
Many of these fish fooled us into thinking they were keepers when they hit and took out lots of drag. All the fish are very wide, fat, with big shoulders. They are the perfect light tackle and fly rod fish for a fun day on the bay. We also got into some BIG fish today and that is the icing on the cake for a great angler like Dick Bowman, who works very hard every charter. Great day on the bay!
Top fly today: NOT the Baymen Universal, which is my Go-To for 75% of my striped bass fishing. But today, the fish did not want it. I switched over to a pattern Dick Bowman gave me called a Blane Chocklett Polar Changer in All white. The fish hammered it. For light tackle, we continue to do well on rubber crankbaits and Baymen Jigs fished on the bottom.
