40 Fish on Fly & LT
On board today, I had repeat clients Gene and Julie DuPuis for Fly & Light Tackle striped bass.
At first light, overcast skies, water temps 67, and the last two hours of dropping tide. Fish were stacked in the rips as the tide was heading out to sea. We had hook-ups on just about every drift in several of my spots. Julie crushed it on LT rubber crank baits and Gene went to work with the fly rod and my Baymen Universal and Baymen Clouser. The fish absolutely destroyed the fly. I would drift up to the drop-offs, Gene would water haul and then cast right on the drop-offs. One or two strips and it was fish on every drift. What a blast!
As the tide ebbed, we began to move around the bay and found some solo fish in the cuts. We had several follows but no takers. then we decided to run Browns Bank and switch up our gear to bottom jigging with Baymen Jigs. We jigged several of the drop offs and never had a hit. Back inside the bay, we found a few more fish around Clarks Island. Later in the morning, we found new topwater fish coming into the bay on the rising tide in 2-3 fow. Gene worked the fly and Julie worked LT and did well.
Our total catch and release today was 40 striped bass to 26″ inches. Hard fight, fat schoolies on light tackle and the fly rod is just a blast! The weather was beautiful, a classic September morning.
