30 fish, 1 keeper
On board today, I had regulars Gary Condon of Affordable Closet Systems, Kevin Erickson of Erickson Enterprises, and Matt “Wompum” Daly for LT striped bass.
At first light, the bay was a sheet of glass and dead calm. And it stayed that way all morning. Just beautiful. Our first stop yielded a handful of short bass on rubber cranks and Capt. Dave’s Baymen Jig. Second stop of the morning and were into a nice spring blitz of bass busting bait on the surface with lots of gulls working overhead. We set numerous drifts on the glassy bay and got into a bunch of fish.
As you may have read before, Gary & crew have been fishing with me for years. One of their trademarks is to arrive with Dunkin Donuts coffeed for everyone and several coolers PACKED with food!!! Today, Gary and the crew brought several pounds of lobster meat, four types of rolls, fresh romaine lettuce, spring water, ice tea, soda; fresh pastries, chocolate chip cookies, several types of candy bars, chocolate eclairs, sandwiches, and the list goes on! After fishing hard for several hours, we stopped and we dined!
As the tide started to top out, the bite shut down cold. No birds, no bait, no bass. It was dead. But still flat calm and you could see a dimple a half-mile away. I decided to cruise slowly over some deep channels in the hopes of marking some fish. No luck. All bass and bait had left the bay – except for one small pod that popped up for five minutes. We saw them break the surface, motored over and immediately had multiple hook-ups, including a small keeper that slammed my Baymen Jig. Then the fish were gone. We searched for another half-hour but they never showed again.
Total catch today was 30 fish caught and released, and one 28.5 inch keeper that went home with Kevin for dinner with his wife. A great morning on the bay with glassy seas.
