13 fish, 1 keeper
Crazy busy at BAYMEN in the thick of the guide fishing season. Just to give you an idea, today is Monday and I am just getting to writing Friday’s Baymen Fishing Report!
FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 2015
On board today, I had repeat client, Dick Bowman for light tackle striped bass. Dick has been fishing with me for many season’s. We met years back at Bass Pro Shops. Imagine that. I thought I owned every piece of tackle known to man until I met Dick. If I don’t have it – he does!
We headed out at first light under a light south wind and the last quarter of the dropping tide. The bay was much quieter than it was earlier in the week. Very little bird action, almost no bait, and very few birds. Our first stop of the morning was a structure rip and we pulled several fish off that spot to about 25″ inches, on The Baymen Jig.
Next stop, we spotted birds working in the Saquish rip. Not a lot and they were not holding. They were running crazy and the topwater blitz action lasted in ten second bursts. We set several drifts and hooked up on a couple fish. At times like this, I like to troll to cover more water and to attract the crazy running bass. It worked. A small, chunky keeper slammed a Tsunami “pogy” popper, aka a Smokey Joe 5″ inch floating popper. He hit it hard just before the rip, over eel grass beds.
Later in the am as the tide turned, we met up with Greg “High Rod” Smith who offered us a bunch of macks he jigged up offshore. We gladly took them and spent the next few hours drifting live, whole and chunk baits. We landed two more fish on bait in the Beach Channel.
At the end of the morning near the top of the tide, to my surprise, topwater broke out again! Same type of blitz we saw at first light: ten second bursts and then nothing for serveral minutes. Then another ten second blitz 100-300 yards away. It was run and gun to try and time the spot they would pop up next. we landed several more fish using this technique.
Total catch for the morning: 13 striped bass, and 1 keeper. We mixed it up, worked it hard, and had a wonderful morning on flat-calm seas.
Stay posted: Some BIG fish in the canal coming our way this week!
