24 Fish,blues
On board today, I had repeat clietn Jack Manly and family. Jack has been fsihing with me for five years and it is always a fun time! Today, was no exception.
We started later than normal to accomodate travel from Chicago, CT, and MA. Once on the bay, we got into a pod of topwater stripers for a solid 1 1/2 hours. We have a nice overcast sky that eventually gave way to bright sun and blue skies. But the first hour+ was non-stop action on topwater poppers. Once the sun got bright, the topwater bite shut off.
Next up we ran to the power plant on rumors of big blues in the area. When we arrived, three other boats were trolling the area. I am not a big fan of trolling, so we tried heavy jigs dropped to the bottom and reeled back up quickly. Nothing… Not even a bump. Then, I saw a single blue crusing topwater just off the bow. We worked that piece of water to no avail.
I started to think about what I have done in past years when blues were nowhere to be found. Slowly, we switched up our gear to topwater poppers on wire but still fish the heavy jigs. Guess what they wanted today? Topwater poppers! We landed our first one and saw some decent schools running with the big blue. Then, I decided to leave the area where the boats were and fish a tiny rip line in the area that looked fishy. As we motored that way, the rip erupted with a large school of blues! We set our drifts and had big blues leaping out of the water after out tackle. It was very exciting and kids were tag teaming each other to fight the fish.
Total cactch today was 24 fish, mostly short striped bass with some big blues at the power plant. Topwater plugs and wire leaders on light tackle got the job done. A great day on the bay with some great clients.
Tight lines & stay posted:
