11 Fish, 1 Keepah
Vaca is ovah and Baymen is back full throttle right into October.
On board today, I had repeat client, Ed from Idaho, for striped bass and blues.
At first light, a smattering of schoolies around the bay. But we were on a mission to slam the big blues at the power plant. We pulled into the area with no other boats in sight. Set up wire leads on topwater and swimmers and started searching for blues… And we searched and searched and search. Visually and with sonar. We trolled, we cast, and we struck out! Not a single bluefish at the power plant this am at sunrise. Last night, they were there. My guess: Tuna came through. However, there was not a scrap of bait for miles.
Next stop Gurnet rocks in search for a big bass. ZIP! Then, we moved around the cliff to no avail. From there, we trolled the entire Plum Hills waters. ZIP! Bug Light: ZIP! Browns Bank: ZIP! Whites Flat: ZIP! Saquish Head – FISH ON! Nothing to write home about, but we got into several schoolies to 26″ inches.
Out to the #1 to jig for macks (!). We hit a school on our first drift and boated six. Another drop and we landed another. Then numerous more drops all the way to Stellwagon (ok, we didn’t go out quite that far) and never another mack. So, we ran back inside, but our macks into tiny pieces and drifted over structure. GAME ON! A decent amount of fish but all of them schoolies in the 26-27.5 inch range. Runs on every drift. Then, we hooked into another fish that felt heavier – KEEPAH! Again, nothing to write home about, but it was a legal take-home fish that went back into the water with the rest.
Total fish landed today: 11 including the keepah. Macks were scarce but in 45-60 fow. Topwater lures today were Chug Bugs in white/red. We also threw a Ranger for the heck of it and bass kept slamming it but would not take it. It was a single hook on wire, so maybe that was the reason…?
Bay is very, very slow right now. Out front is even worse. No fluke around our waters to speak of. No blues anywhere today but we did not go past High Pines or as far south as Mary Anne’s. So, they are somewhere just not here right now.
Back at it right into October. Stay posted:
