201 Fish – New Boat Record!
Wednesday, June 8, 2016
About every ten to fifteen years, everything comes together perfectly on the bay and something spectacular happens!
Today, I had repeat clients Frank Harrington of Stow, Ken Hartshorn of Marlboro, and Frank’s two sons: Gregory from Berlin, and Brian from Ayer. Frank and Co. have been fishing with me for several seasons and today they hit the jackpot! They set a new Baymen Boat Record for most fish (striped bass) ever caught on our charters: 201 fish!
At first light, there was a small school of topwater fish in the Cow Yard. There was also a ton of fish down deep in the Kingston Channel. There was also a ton of fish at Saquish Head, The Duxbury Channel, Splitting Knife Channel, Clark’s Island Channel, The Beach Channel… You name it, there was a pod of fish there. And it never let up the entire morning.
Today, we had more fish in the bay than we have seen all season long. They were there on the dropping, they continued to feed on the slack, and they were there on the incoming. Birds showed up, baits poured in, and the bass were with them. No giant fish, for sure. All these striped bass averaged 24″-27.5″ inches with one keeper out of 201 fish. These were all fat, healthy, year-class fish that will all be keepers in the 2018 spring blitz. All 201 fish were landed on my Baymen Jigs, sub-surface and down deep in 7-30 FOW.
A couple other things unique about today: We got one tagged fish that was tagged in NJ by the American Littoral Society. We will be sending that tag in to get the data on that fish. Something else that was unique: as we were motoring up the Kingston Channel, one of the anglers yelled “Look at the deer!” There was a big doe just swimming out of the channel. She went up onto the flats and then ran across Captain’s Flat. It was a beautiful site to see.
So today, the new Baymen Boat Record was established. The old record of 167 fish held for about fifteen years, set by Terry Bothwell and his two boys.
I should note, we never try to set records on Baymen Charters. We are all about giving our clients an enjoyable morning on the bay and getting them into fish. Year to year, we average 15 fish per trip. Some days we hit the “Daily-Double” but regardless, we always have fun, even when the fishing is slow. But sometimes everything comes together perfectly on the bay and something spectacular happens!
Congrats to Frank, Ken, Gregory and Brian on catching and releasing 201 striped bass on light tackle Baymen Jigs, with Baymen Charters. This record is going to hold for some time…
