Striper Insanity – 47 Fish on LT
YESTERDAY July 14th Baymen Report:
Striper Insanity this morning with Tom Bullock’s crew, Travis Ludwig and his two boys, 12 and 16. 47 fish to 32″ inches, all on light tackle, all in shallow water, all on single barbless hooks. What a blast!
At first light, the last hour of dropping on a near calm sea with a wisp of NE. As the morning progressed, the wind turned to a very light SSW. It was just lovely out there.
First spot of the morning – FISH ON! We got into striped bass on the very first drift and had some double hook-ups. No keepers in the school, but some nice fish to about 27″ inches on LT. Then the tide bottomed out and those fish moved out of the bay.
Next up, I moved to one of my favorite low slack tide spots in the bay (I have many, but this spot that I call “T-Time” is a favorite). It is one of the many cuts around the bay that is only visible at dead-low tide. It did not disappoint this morning and we landed several fish including one bass just short of a keeper.
Next up, we left that area and I had a full agenda for where we would fish on the incoming tide. But we only got to fish two more spots – they were On Fire with bass on the rising tide. They just kept coming in waves. Most were sub-surface and on the bottom, but there was also a very active topwater action as baits were leaping out of the water and bass were right on their heals. Fun to watch and fish! There were also three seals in our area working the bass. We avoided them.
The last spot of the morning gave up two keepers. A great piece of water if you know how the structure lays and you can read the water as it flows over the area. I actually use reading the water more in this area than most of my other areas. There are many mini boils and rips and seams that set up and you can only visually see them on a flat-calm day on an incoming tide.
Well, we finally wrapped up our last drift and headed to the harbor to fillet up our keepers. Striper on the grill tonight! Total catch and release today for this crew from PA was 47 striped bass, with two dinner fish for Tom and his crew. All fish were landed in shallow waters, with single hooks, with crimped barbs. A great morning on the bay!
I am back on vacation again starting tomorrow for a week and then it is full-steam ahead with charters stacked up right into October. Stay Posted:
