33 Fish
Greetings from Baymen Charters & Capt. Dave!
On board today, one of my regulars, Baymen Dick Bowman, for light tackle striped bass. Dick has been fishing with me for many years on the bay.
At first light, calm conditions with a wisp on NW wind. We ran across the bay and started our first drift. WHAM! Fish on! I think it was Dick’s first cast. We worked this piece of water until the tide bottomed out, and hooked up on just about every single drift on fish to 27 3/4″ inches.
Next spot of the morning, a favorite cut back into the flats. We landed a few fish and had a very exciting and explosive hit from a striped bass that launched right out of the water. It looked like a magazine cover and is one of the sweet images I will remember for long time when I drift off to sleep. It was just so cool to watch it hit the topwater popper into the air and launch itself completely airborne after the lure! Wow!
Well, next spot of the morning was across the bay and up onto the edge of some flats until we bottomed out. Several fish working the skinny water. We then moved down the bay a few hundred yards and got into more fish. Some of the bass were chasing a 4-5″ inch brownish bait fish leaping clear of the water trying to escape the bass right beside the boat. Very cool to see.
We worked the water some more and then enjoyed a break with great conversation about everything under the sun. We ended the morning with 33 striped bass caught and released. Tackle today that worked well were Baymen Jibs, rubber crank baits, and topwater Hogy poppers. A lovely morning of fishing on the bay!
