Largemouth Bass
I have been fishing freshwater quite a bit this July. It is a nice break from the bay (I can’t believe I just said that) and I really enjoy the ecosystems of freshwater ponds on the MA coast and Cape Cod. So much to see, learn and take in, not to mention the fishing!
Last night I fished the Cape with friends Joe Smith and Joel Clifford, for largemouth in the lilypads. I was 3 for 7 and of course, lost my best fish in the pads. I never saw him, but my stout bass rod was doubled over after it slammed a Live Target rubber frog. I was sure I had a solid hook-set, but some how that fish threw the hook!
But one that did not get away, was a nice, little bass that slammed one of my favorite lures – A Bill’s Chipmunk! Few people know that largemouth bass love chipmunks, mice and small birds. Work these lures along the pads and you may hook into the fish of your dreams
One lure you should try if you enjoy fishing rubber frogs, is Live Targets new rubber mouse. This lure is tops and looks and feels like the real thing. Bass will inhale it. I bought the last one they had at Bass Pro Shops and then landed a massive maple branch on my first cast – sixy feet up – where it still sits to this day. Now I am saving my pennies for another one!
Back out on the bay now in search of macks and big stripers. Stay posted.
Sincerely,
Capt. Dave
