70 Fish
On Board today, I had new client, Don Savery & his three sons, for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, dead-calm, slight overcast, and thick dense fog from Plymouth and east. We decided to head for the first spot of the morning that has been producing well all week. Sure enough, there were a ton of fish there, though small schoolies. But they hit our light tackle with gusto and it was game on with multiple triple hook-ups. The fog rolled in across the bay and we lost all sight of land. But the birds were active and we followed them through the fog to the fish. It was great fishing!
For the second half of our charter, we ran east as the fog began to break up. No birds, no topwater,so we set up on small rips and the fish were stacked up on the bottom. You had to set your drifts right over the drop-offs. Miss it by fifty yards and you caught nothing. Set up on the seams and it was fish on!
We had 69 fish caught and released to 26 1/2″ inches when the fog began to roll back into the bay. It was thick and we ran ahead of it to avoid having to travel many miles at a crawl. Back inside the bay, we set up a few more drifts in some of my spots and landed our final fish of the morning.
Total catch and release today was 70 fish, all on light tackle. We got into a nice school of giant hickory shad at one point, but the rest of the fish were all striped bass. No sign of blues, but we did see several seals around the bay. Top tackle today was my Baymen Jig and rubber crank baits.
Back at it as the Fall Run continues… Stay posted:
