42 Fish
On board today, I had new clients, Chris and Molly DeVillers, for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, the bay was lit up with schools of skittish fish and bait. Light West winds and a high tide held fish inside for about three hours.
We did well on rubber crank baits and top-water poppers. Chris hooked into a decent keeper that took line and put up a great fight. Half-way to the net, that big fish threw the hooks on the popper.
We continued to slam schoolie stripers up to 26″ inches. Then, at slack tide, the bite slowed way down. We moved around the bay and started to hit some of my prime structure spots but they were nearly void of fish. All the bass were on the bait balls today, and very tightly schooled up. None of my structure spots held any fish!
We took a short coffee break by The Mayflower. God bless the sacrifice of our forefathers. I am always in awe and very humbled to sit in the middle of the history of our great country.
We wrapped up the morning working more structure and rip lines. No bait and no bass to be found. From what I could decipher, all the bait and bass left the bay on the dropping tide and they did it very quickly.
Total catch today: 42 striped bass to 26″ inches landed and released on light tackle. A world-class morning on the bay.
Stay posted: The wicked winds are gone for now and Light And Variable is on tap for the next few days.
