35 Fish, 1 Keeper
On board today, I had new client, Scott Brymer and his friend, Dan, for fly fishing only striped bass.
At first light, the bay was socked in with dense fog and light rain. Very light SE/E winds. We ran to our first spot of the morning, hoping that the fish I found yesterday were still there. They were and a handful of birds gave away their position. We fished Baymen Universals on intermediate Rio lines with sink tips. The fish were all small, up to 20.5″ inches.
Second spot of the morning, we fished a rocky shoreline that looked fishy and has produced for us in the past. Not a single fish there. “Fish are where you find them, not where you want them to be…”
Next stop we ran across the bay to fish some structure. We teased up some fish with a big popper and then threw small fly poppers and a Baymen Universal to them. Worked like a charm and we picked up several more fish.
Our last stop of the morning was a shallow trough about one hundred yards long. 3-4 feet of water with some structure and weed beds. We picked up a few more fish on a nice drift. Then, Dan hooked into a good one that took him right into his backing. Oddly, this fish ran to shore before turning and running for deeper water. Then it hugged the bottom. We landed that fish, Dan’s first ever keeper on the fly, and then released him.
Total catch and release today was 35 striped bass, all on the fly rods. Not bad for day of fog and rain on the bay!
Tight Lines,
Capt. Dave
