39 Fish
On board today, I had repeat clients, Dwight Pierce, John Soucy, and Stephano for light tackle striped bass.
At first light we found a small pod of striped bass working top-water. They were moving around very fast and they were shy of the boat. We set drifts and picked up a bunch of shorts.
Next spot, we had a few hits and Stephano hooked into a keeper. That fish made a couple of decent runs and then threw the hook at the back of the boat. Heart breaker!
Third spot of the morning yieled some decent fishing. We switched over from rubber crank baits to top-water Heddon Super Spooks. The action was pretty steady for several hours. We hooked into another keeper late morning that made a wicked top-water strike, turned and began to run for deeper waters – then if threw the hook. Ugh…!!!
Fourth spot had no fish. Fifth spot had no fish. Sixth spot had some nice fish marked down deep at the edge of a flat where it drops into the channel. Those fish had lock jaw and would not take. Spot number seven gave us some bumps but no fish. Spot eight had no fish. The last stop of the morning yielded another bass, a decent schoolie in the low 20’inches.
Total catch and release today was 39 fish and we had to work for most of them. It was heart breaking dropping the keepers, but thats fishing!
Back at it. Good luck this weekend to all of you that are heading out.
Sincerely,
Capt. Dave
