33 Fish
I had a rare Sunday charter today, and fished with my regular client, Billy Tedeschi, for stripers and blues on light tackle.
At first light, we found fish breaking under birds scattered around the bay. Very few birds and small schools of striped bass in very shallow water! At one point we were in about twelve inches and slipped off the flats before low tide.
A little later in the morning, we found a ton of schooled bass in a long, narrow channel of about three feet in depth. Crazy numbers of bass, all shorts, slammed our Yo-Zuri poppers and rubber cranks baits. As soon as slack tide hit, the bite shut off like a switch. Not a fish to be found.
Next stop, we fished the power plant with over thirty other boats. Compared to the last two weeks, blues have thinned out by 80%! Very slow for us and for the other boats from what we could see. We picked up a total of four medium blues. No giants and only a handful of fish compared to previous trips over there.
Back inside the bay, we found more small schools of striped bass up on the flats in skinny water. We fished Yo-zuri poppers, Heddon super spooks, and rubber crank baits and caught fish on all of them. One bass exploded on Billy’s Yo-zuri popper from the side and we both said it looked like a keeper. Double set of trebles and that fish threw the hook! How do they do that…?
Total catch today was 33 fish: 4 blues and 29 striped bass caught and released. The bay was dead-calm all morning and it felt like a summer day!
Hard to believe we are just days away from October and hunting season. But who’s counting…?
Tight Lines & see you on the bay!

ps – a FB friend of mine in Maine is still getting into a lot of small bass. Those fish should be here over the next week.
