30 Striped Bass on Fly
On board today, my client and good friend, Col. Richard Comstock (ret.), for fly or die striped bass fishing. At first light, a high tide dropping and calm seas. Light WNW wind and a slight overcast.
We found a handful of fish right away under a few birds working topwater and picked up out first bass of the morning. After a few more fish, I really wanted to go see if that half-mile of striped bass from a few days ago was still inside the bay. We ran recon and watched sonar and searched deep water in vain. All those – long gone and heading north as the migration continues.
Back under birds with a dozen other boats and we picked up a few more bass. If you fish with me, you know I hate to fish with other boats all on top of each other. Not my style and not much fun when I have clients on board. We drove away from breaking fish and headed into Duxbury waters for the last two hours of dropping. Bingo! We found a nice school of fish down on the bottom and no boats. We worked that school of fish for two hours . The highlight was when we drifted up on a flat and started fishing 1.4 feet of water – barely enough to float the boat. WHAM! Big Fish On! A bass came out of nowhere and slammed my BAYMEN Universal Fly that I tied up last night. That fish took Col. Comstock right to the reel and into the backing. It ran for deeper water, could not find any, and ran back up on the flats. It was a great fight to the boat. At one point the leader wrapped on the fish’s gill plate and I was nervous it would cut the line. But the fish rolled, the leader slid out of the gill plate and the Baymen Universal Fly hook held in the corner of the fish’s mouth. A real beautiful fish and a great fish on the fly!
After that great fish, we decided to run to Plymouth waters and work the flats, cuts and channels. We found a bunch more fish, mostly small schoolies and wrapped up our morning.
Total catch and release today was 32 striped bass all the fly and all taken on Baymen Universals and Baymen Clouser fly patterns. A an absolutely beautiful day on the bay!

SIDE NOTES: We got bit off by our 5th bluefish of the season. All have been surprises and none of them seen. Also, lots of gray seals inside the bay today. No sign of GW sharks. Thunder heads were on the northern horizon and rain squalls just offshore. ORVIS sinking lines and RIO intermediate striped bass lines on 9WT and 8WT Temple Fork Rods were the tools of the trade. 20lb tippets with Baymen Universal Fly patterns.
