30 Fish
On board today, I had Rolando Jeter for fly fishing and light tackle striped bass. Rolando has been fishing with me for about 15 years.
At first light, the bay was very quiet for topwater sight fishing. But we found a great school of small striped bass that were stacked up and on the feed, all on topwater. It was like a fall blitz.
We started on light tackle with rubber cranks, then switched to Baymen Jigs. After landing a few fish on LT, we made the switch to Fly Fishing and it was non-stop action all morning. Rolando fished a sweet 8 Wt Hardy in six-piece, with a floating line. We fished many flies including a Baymen Universal, Holy Baymen, White Clouser, Rainies Popper, a 20 year old Red Fish pattern (!) and a Jack Gartside Gurggler in White. All the patterns caught fish but the top producers were The Red Fish pattern and the Garside Gurggler. The most exciting were the topwater hits but it was all good!
We ended the morning by switching back to LT and fished a Mag Darter. The morning bite was over and we called it a great day on the bay! Total catch and release today was 30 fish, most of them on the fly. But we did get a few on LT including a 16″ inch fluke!
Back at it stay posted. The Fall Run begins around August 20th…
