20 Fish
On board today, I had new client, Anthony Papile and friends for light tackle striped bass. NOAA forecast called for light West wind on a rising tide at sunrise. A great combination for great fishing.
No topwater or bird activity to speak of which is the norm for late June inside our bay. But fish are setting up on structure around the bay and the summer pattern has started. Some of our spots today had pockets of bait and no bass. Other spots had a white sheet of paper on the sonar screen. And a few spots had a few bass.
We fished rubber crank baits with the cast and count (bails open) technique and started to pick up fish. A few fish were up on the flats, some where on the rip lines. Almost no fish were found on structure. Bait was sparse overall and so were the bass. But we kept at it and moved around a lot and fished about a dozen of my spots in Duxbury and Plymouth waters.
Total catch and release was a hard-earned twenty fish, all shorts but very feisty, healthy fish. Most did not have sea lice. I spoke with two other boats and they both said fishing was very slow with them as well. The word on mack at the moment is “thinned out and moved offshore.” I did check with a Boston guide and he said Boston was lit up and non-stop all morning. So that’s where the fish went today!
Slow fishing but a lovely, sunny day on the bay with a touch of East wind mid-morning that slowed the bite. A great crew today that worked hard for every fish.
