Today was a fun day with Col. Richard “The Machine” Comstock (Ret.), his son Richard III, and his grandson’s Rhys (5) and Asher (3).
The plan was to head out at sunrise with Richard and his son with fly gear. Then mid-morning, head back to the dock and pick up the grandchildren and go back out for some striped bass on chunk bait (thanks to Capt. Glen Soul for the macks).
At sunrise, it was a light West wind and sunny skies. No birds and no topwater action anywhere. Not to worry, I have over fifty structure spots around the bay and we would find fish in the top ten. First drift was over a small rip that is always good for a fish or two or ten but today it was void of fish. Second spot of the morning is a favorite dead-low tide spot named “T” Time. It too was void of fish, although we did get a bump from a small bass.
Next spot of the morning is a classic incoming tide spot that gets fished a lot and is even marked on the nautical tide charts. We fished it pretty thoroughly and Richard’s son picked up his first fish of the morning on my Baymen Universal fly pattern fished on an intermediate line. We continued working this piece of water and saw only one other fish.
Today’s tide was a -1.8 low and the drifts were very fast in most locations. I think this was the reason for the slow fishing, lack of bait and bass. But we kept at it and drifted a few more spots to no avail. But it was still a nice morning to wet a fly in some classic structure.
Back at the dock, we picked up two very handsome Comstock boys ready to fish with their Dad and Grandfather. We set up our first drift of the morning with about a dozen other boats ( you know the spot if you drift macks) and nobody was hooking up. Earlier, when the tide had first turned, Capt. Glen put three keepers in the cooler with his crew. So, we set many drifts without a run before moving to our next spot of the morning. Rhys and Asher were having a ball and enjoying being on the bay. They had a boatload of very intelligent questions and I patiently answered every one. We also caught a few crabs, blue mussels, a worm, and some barnacles that they were very interested in.
At our next spot, there was a seal right in the middle of our drift. So, we moved up bay a short distance and dunked our chunks in a nice piece of water. Zip. Not a bump. Next two spots the same. The last spot of the morning, first drift, WHAM! Keepah on the line! That fish was a long time coming but it was worth all the effort. Richard Sr. fought and brought that fish to the boat and I netted it. We took some photos and released it to swim another day.
We drifted several more times over the same area and no more fish were around. Total catch and release today was two striped bass. A slow morning of fishing but everyone had a fun time and the boys were quite happy and content to enjoy the whole of the experience of being on the bay for Father’s Day weekend with their father and grandfather. Today’s trip would not of been possible without them.
Back at it, stay posted:
