19 fish
On board today, I had regular client, Billy Tedeschi for light tackle striped bass.
At first light there was a major “spring blitz” on the bay. tons of bait and tons of striped bass busting the bait on the surface. And lots of birds overhead. It was a classic blitz of stripers all around our boat. I joked with Billy that we should just try netting them as they swam by. Thats how thick they were! They were all small fish and very finicky. The wanted small rubber crank baits and thats about it. We landed a few on poppers but the majority came on rubber cranks.
After the blitz slowed down and several other boats got into the mix, we decided to run the bay and search for some bigger fish. We got intercepted by Greg ‘High Rod’ Smith who once again offered us live macks he jigged out front. We gladly took them and spent the rest of the morning live-lining the bay. But it was in vain. We picked up two small bass and that was it. And we hit a LOT of my live bait spots from Duxbury to Kingston to Plymouth. No bass to be found. We did have one decent hit and run at our last spot of the morning, but that fish spit the bait pretty quick.
Total catch and release today: 19 striped bass to 25″ inches, all but two on light tackle. The others were landed on macks. An osprey was doing some fishing of its own and took home a short fish!
A lovely morning on the bay with very little wind and a stunning sunrise.
