19 Fish
On board today I had Tom Bullock’s Nephew Dan McGee, Dan’s wife Marla, their son, Ameer, and Tom’s friend, John Wolff, for light tackle striped Bass. Tom could not go with us today, but met everyone at the dock to wish us well and see us off (Tom is my longest-standing client and has been fishing with me for 23 years!)
At first light, a West wind and gorgeous sunrise on a dropping tide. First stop of the morning was just get everyone use to the gear before we started fishing. But We started hooking up right away in the middle of the tackle demo! A great start to the morning…
We started to mark some huge schools of fish, some of them cows, down on the bottom. Dan hooked into an absolute monster that spooled him in seconds! He regained line, I backed the boat down for five minutes… !The fish just kept taking line and I knew it had to be very, very big! We finally got the line recovered and had the fish about 20 feet from the boat. BING…. The hook finally wore through and the fish threw the Baymen Jig. HEART BREAKER on an absolute beast of a bass…
As the tide bottomed out we switched up to topwater poppers. We had some hits but nothing hooked up. Then, I marked another pod of GIANT bass in a channel. I switched everyone back over to Baymen Jigs and Dan hooked into a BIG ONE! That fish began taking line and I was thinking we were going to have to back down the boat again! The fish ran up on a flat, turned, and then sped into the deep water channel. Then it hugged the bottom and it was pump and crank to get it to the boat. TWENTY-ONE POUNDS, 39″ inches!
So, we go back to where the MONSTER BASS threw the hook earlier. Marla hooks up on another big one. And you will not believe it, but that fish also threw the hook twenty feet from the boat…! Two big ones lost, but a very nice one in the cooler.
Total catch today was 19 fish, all of them on Baymen Jigs. The big fish we kept had two mackerel, a flounder and a snail in its belly. The fillets were giant and Tom Bullock’s crew will be enjoying striped bass!
Back at it. Stay posted: (and fish 2-3 oz Baymen Jigs on the bottom for some big ones)! See Mike at MGC Bait and Tackle on Rte 53, Hanover.
