14 Fish on Light Tackle
On board today, Gary Condon and Greg Powers for light tackle striped bass. Gary has been fishing with me for 20 years.
At first light, cold wind N/NE and steady for the entire morning. All the birds and topwater fish that had been inside the bay for the past three days were gone! Total ghost town… So, we buckled up and began to work the structure all around the bay and pick off fish one by one.
The top lure today was my Baymen Jig tied by Jeck’s Bucktails. The fish absolutely slammed it. My Baymen Jig is tied identical to the color scheme of my Baymen Universal Fly pattern for fly fisherman. Olive, Pink and White with red gills and peacock hurl over the back, with black thread wraps. You can watch how to tie my Baymen Universal Fly on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8u-_gazHyis We also fished flats areas and underwater cuts with rubber cranks baits in the shallower waters.
Total catch and release today was 14 striped bass, all shorts, all very fat and healthy fish. The N/NE winds made fishing slow and difficult and but we were relentless and found the fish, one by one, scattered around the bay. A great morning!
Back at it and hoping this wind lays down and turns W or S. That would bring the big schools of fish back into the bay.
